I upgraded to FCP 7 after I realized I wasn’t getting anywhere trying to transcode some AVCHD clips to 422 pro res from a Panasonic HMC150. After about 24 hours the progress bar has made it to about 75% so I cancelled it. I’m on a 10.5.8 running 2.6ghz Intel core two duo and 4gigs of ram. There’s no way this is acceptable, what am I doing wrong?

Send screenshots of your timeline, sequence settings and your system specs. Sounds very long…

May sound silly but try repairing disk permissions for your boot drive in Disk Utility. When permissions get thrown out of whack often everything suffers. That’s usually my first go to when it comes to diagnostics. Just an easy, general, thing to get out of the way.
