can dropping a mini dv tape cause damage to footage itself?
So i had a tape hit the hardwood floor from a height of about 4 feet. I didnt’ shoot the footage, but when I viewed it for the first time the entire tape had artifacts or glitches throughout the entire thing. Big blocky glitches along the left side of frame…….think the drop could have caused this, and more importantly can it be fixed?

Unfortunately, dropping the tape can definitely damage it. As far as I know, there is no way to salvage the footage. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Sometimes you get lucky, other times…

See if you can locate a SONY DSR-2000 DVCAM deck. It has a function that allows it to play damaged tapes. I saw a demo at NAB about 5 or 6 years ago where they took a wrinkled tape that would not play in anything else because of numerous problems but it played perfectly in the 2000. The engineer that turned me on to this was Sony’s Richard Miller. He has since retired but there was a guy named Patel Something that also was up to speed on this little marvel.

That or take it to a good dub house that has that deck or another high end DVCAM deck. Chances are quite high that it can be saved. Lightning Dubbs in L.A. is one place that can do this for you…

I’ve heard mixed reports as to whether or not dropping a tape could cause the problem that is in front of me….here’s a better idea of what it looks like.

Tyler – Where are you anyway? There is a DSR2000 in the COW classifieds and the guy is in Burbank. By the way, the DSR 2000 is the only deck in the world with this error correction circuitry.
I could not link to your sample shots so I don’t know what it looked like.

I’m in Edmonton Alberta, Canada.
Might have a bite on the deck in my city. Yeah sorry the links were entered wrong (i fixed them), but i think everyone is familiar with this type of glitch, drop out or what ever it is.
