STUCK PANASONIC PRO MINIDV TAPE (ANY IDEAS?)
Hello Cow friends, I have a question for anyone who might have encountered this situation before:
We have a MiniDV tape that was shot last week in Florida that won’t play at all on any decks/the camera, etc. The spools are stuck (won’t turn), even when we flip back the protective bar and tug on the tape. It’s a Panasonic Pro MiniDV, and there are no screws to “take it apart). We already left a message for Panasonic, but you know how that goes…
Does anyone know of a place that re-spools so-called “stuck” tapes? Or, any other suggestions? (besides, ‘fly your ass back to Florida and re-shoot?’)

If you look at the bottom of the tape, there are four od the smallest screws you’ve ever seen in your life. Use an eyeglass screwdriver, and a small one at that, and you can take it apart. Be very careful, as you will drop parts from the middle if you aren’t. You also may want to press on the green piece on the bottom and see if that releases things. Let me know if you still have issues.

Are you sure? We don’t see the screws on the Panasonic MiniDV Pros? (I see them on other brands, but not this one??

Start calling post-production/dub houses in your area. Respooling is easy if you know what you’re doing. I would not recommend doing it yourself if you don’t. In L.A. Lightning Dubbs does this:

You are correct about the screws. The newest versions of Pro tape do not have screws, and the body is sealed. In fact the only model left with screws is the AMQ top of the line. To the problem- It is possible with a small drill bit to drill out the holes where the screws should be. If you do this carefully enough you will be able to open the case and then transfer the spools to a new case. The problem is with the locking mechanism of the spools, not the spools themselves.
