  Shotgun mic with pan dvx 100b

  hi,

  so i just got a at897 audio technica shotgun mic for my panasonic dvx 100b. I’m not sure that i am working it properly.
  The steps i have taken :

  mount the mic with fresh battery inside.
  hook up to input 1 with xlr cable
  Place channel 1 select (button under LCD screen) on input 1
  PLace channel 2 select on INT
  Made certain input 1 button was on the on switch
  Made certain input 2 button was on off switch

  I shot a few thigns around the house with the shotgun mic pointed at it, and when i played it back on my camera it didnt sound a whole lot different or with more clarity than before with the internal microphone.
  What gives?
  Will i only be able to hear a difference from a monitor other than camera playback?
  please help

  Mis givings people have about a shotgun, what did you shoot around the house ? people talking ? the closeer the mic to the audio source the better the sound. Shotguns do really not work good around solid walls floors, too much refelctions. Tell us what you are trying to record. Also get the mic off the camera Always try and get the ic closer to the audio source

  When you monitored the playback audio, were you listening to both audio channels or just channel 1?

  Tim,

  I rechecked using my tv as a monitor and speaking right into the at 897, and it worked just fine. I guess i was just wasnt sure what to expect because ive never used one of those mics before, but i definitely heard a good difference. Thanks for your input which propelled me to go back and try it out again. I am going to be shooting and recording sounds at windy baseball games. I purhased a rycote softie for the shotgun mic, do you have any other tips and suggestions. I will be attempting to pick up doc style dialogue as well as sounds from about 20-30 feet away. Is this feasible with the at-897?

  Well, 20-30 feets is quite a distance, so don’t be expecting miracles from your SOTs. The closer the better, and of course, keep the mic pointed directly at what you want to capture. And for the wind, I’ve often found fiber scrimming material (used to diffuse lighting) works really well in a pinch to knock down wind noise.

  Finally, you might be able to do some EQ in post to give your subjects a bit more “presence”.
