Need to convert 24fps Dailies/EDL to 29.97fps — (captured wrong)
Being very inept at the time, i did the following in FCP 5:
1. Captured 20hrs of 24p (not advanced) dailies @ 24fps.
2. Noticed the dailies looked very blurry/interlaced with quick pans/zooms
3. Continued to work 300+ hours on the documentary.On tape, I have 24P footage (I’m told it’s still 29.97fps) that I captured incorrectly w/ FCP 5.0 @ “virtually” 24fps. (I did a custom capture) I have now re-captured ALL 20hrs. @ “Easy Setup” DV/NTSC @ 29/97 and they turned out great. Here’s my HUGE problem:
The FCP project’s dailies/sequences are all set to 24fps. Yet, the timecode of the dailies is still 30fps. (I’m told this is due to the fact that it is only “virtually” 24fps, and still uses 30fps in the TC) Much of my dailies look CRAPPY because I digitized them wrong and I THINK FCP removed frames, replacing them with others left. (thus the shaky image)
I would like to start a new project and import either the sequences or EDL into it, and RECONNECT the media w/ my new 29.97 dailies. My problem so far when i do, is that the content is off by many seconds/frames. If I place my OLD Dailies (24fps) up against my NEW Dailies (29.97fps), I notice:
1. The TC of both media is close at the BEGINNING of the tapes
2. By the END of the tapes, the OLD 24fps dailies have almost 4 seconds of extra media
3. I have run the numbers, and it seems that my OLD dailies are actually 30fps in TOTAL, which might account for the extra media compared to the NEW 29.97fps media.Is there any way I can fix this HUGE problem using Cinema Tools or FCP? Can i export the EDL and have it converted to match my NEW 29.97 Dailies?

Unfortunately there is no way to automatically fix this. It requires you to fix the project edit by edit. Rest happy with two facts- you are not the first person to make this mistake, it is fixable with time and patience.

Well.. two mistakes in row here, but… this may help just a bit.
Take your 23.98 timeline and export an .EDL of it. Make sure you don’t have tracks all over the place, one video track.
OPEN CINEMA TOOLS and choose, EXPORT/CONVERTED EDL/30fps from 24fps/ the choose the .edl you just opened. Give it a new name like 30 and add the extension, .edl to the name …so 30.edl
IMPORT IN FCP then reconect to the 29.97 footage. Again, this isn’t the way this is supposed to work exactly. You used fcp to remove an advanced pulldown that didn’t exist creating jerky images, then you wanted the timecodes to sync up to 29.97 when… they don’t. There are less numbers in 24fps then 29.97 and those numbers get progressively farther apart the closer to the end of the tape the footage is from. About 4 seconds difference total.
Anyway, you will still probably need to push each edit a frame or so, but you may be back in the ballpark.
