  • Opinions on DVX100 B’s Squeeze Mode?

Posted by Jay Wolf on April 28, 2006 at 1:34 pm

I’ve been researching for a new camera to shoot a documentary with, which I want to shoot in 16×9. I was interested in the Sony Z1 but when I looked at some HD-footage I found it very unattractive. (Too much definition. Who wants life to be that realistic?)
So I’ve been reading a lot of good things about the Panasonics. I’d love to have a HVX200 but it’s too much money at this point. So I’ve been inching more and more towards the DVX100 B. (I’m in PAL-space, by the way)

I have a few questions about the camera:

-what are your thoughts on the aesthetics of (un)Squeeze Mode images, also in comparison to native 16×9?

-is there a reason why I should buy the 100A over the B (except for the interval recording and the fact that A is cheaper?)

    Thanks for the input!

Get a B if you can afford it- it just builds on the strengths of the A model. Squeeze mode is pretty good for working in 16:9 with decent resolution though of course a native 16:9 camera like the HVX in DV mode would be better.

    Thanks for the reply.
I understand you love the Panasonics. Then you would agree that the 100B is the best choice in its priceclass if one would want to get away from the ‘videolook’ as far as possible and shoot a doc in 16×9/25P?

Sure. The next thing up would be the HVX200 which doubles your price but gets you into variable frame rates- like slow motion and high speed and full high definition meaning you’ll be set for many years content delivery wise.

I was -very- tempted to go for the 200 but luckily B&H doesn’t sell the PAL version. To be honest, I can’t really justify the investment. I’m not an indie filmmaker like you- this is my first indie doc and I’m struggling for every euro.
As far as being set for the next few years: by the time the P2 cards and Firestore disks will have dropped to acceptable prices, the next generation Panasonic probably won’t be far away, wouldn’t you say?

Of course- there’s never going to be a “last camera.” Rules of the game. 🙂

I recently got a PAL DVX100b (About a week or so ago) and one of the features that really got me interested was the fact that the B model has Underscanning EVF and LCD. So no nasty surprises with lights in frame, vignetting, or other things like that. Very nice feature.

Also, it can sync timecode with other B models which could be handy for events or multicam interviews.

    Hey Aaron, you again?!

Just asked for a quote on the 100 BE at B&H and there is no rebate for the PAL camera… (it is however $200 cheaper than the BA) not even the Magic Bullet software and the Green DVX handbook+DVD… Bummer. (I asked if they could throw in the book/DVD since I’m ordering a bunch of accessories and that’ll probably go through- but now I want the Magic Bullet as well:)
You’re in New Zealand, right? Did you get any of those goodies with the BE?
