Time of day Sync Timecode
Hello,
We have two Panasonic 100A camera’s that we are using for a studio shoot.
We are trying to find a way to sync the timecodes so our editor can edit the footage easily.
Our edit system does not have firewire, so no Ubit data from the camera can be carried over.What I would like to do is use Time of Day as timecode.. is this possible?
or would we have to jam sync the cameras after every scene/take, and start them up
at the same time (which seems like it would get too complicated)..Really I would like the camera to base the time code on time of day whenever its recording

you could try this, but I doubt that it is frame accurate.
You maight be able to get close and then figure out the offset in FCP when you gang sync the clips to do the line cut.
One thing you can do is record TC to audio ch 2.

if your using all DVX’s.. use free run timecode. Put all cameras on a counter and set it with the remote control all at the same time. You will get true sync on all cameras even when you turn them off and change batteries.

Three of the four cameras are DVX’s. Interestingly, one DVX100, one DVX100a, and one DVX100b.
Do you know of any incompatibility issues I should be aware of between the three models, in terms of synch?
As an aside: The fourth camera will likely be a Canon XL2. Any suggestions for synching this? I suppose we could do a rough and dirty synch by setting that cam to FREE RUN at “about” the same time, then live with it in post. Any ideas, however, to be more exact?

To be more exact, you can try filming the XL2’s timecode display on one of the other cameras. That way your editor can compare the actual timecode to the filmed timecode and hopefully come up with a constant offset.
Also, ensure that you’re using the same mode (DF or NDF) on all cameras.

“drop frame” and “non drop frame”. Two different numbering systems for how the frames get counted. Doesn’t make a whole lot of difference which one you use, just so long as everyone’s using the same system. Ask your editor which one they prefer.

As a follow on to this discussion, I think it’s almost part of the same thread – apologies otherwise, I’m thinking of buying two AG-DVX100B camcorders for shooting a live event. Can I use the firewire output from my Sony DSR570 to set the first AG-DVX100B, then use that to set the second AG-DVX100B, set t/c all in free run, disconnect the f/w cables and expect the cameras to be locked in sync across start stops and battery changes later in the edit?
