  • Which camera for shooting for Plasma TV production?

Posted by Geforce on December 31, 2005 at 3:25 am

    Hi ,
I am looking for some production work basically for Plasma Tv displays. I already own a Sony Z1 U, but unfortunately I find the video poor on wide shots, though it is performing fine, in close ups . I am now thinking of Panasonic DVX-100 A or B 1n 16:9 mode shoot. Can anyone throw in some suggestions, or should I wait for Panasonic HVX200?
    Thanks

The HVX in 1080p would give an excellent image for plasma. But keep in mind that quality depends a lot on the type of plasma display and how the footage is being fed to it.

Why do you need a camera specifically for Plasma displays? Such a thing doesn’t exist. You shoot for video, not for a particular TV technology.

Why does your video on the Sony look different when zoomed out than it does when you’re zoomed in? Do you mean that you can see more detail when you’re zoomed in?

Don’t bother with the HVX…you need serious, expensive hardware to work with it right now. Why not wait until your other cameras are out of date? Just a thought.

    Cheers!

Oh, and ask yourself this: why are you planning on it being shown on Plasma? Is that what you own, and you want to be able to view it, or is this for a client who already owns one?

To be honest, Plasma is not the best Tech out there, and there’s an even newer tech coming out this year, and it’s supposed to literally be the best picture you’ll be able to get for years to come. It’s a combo of OLED and Tube, I believe.

Anyway, Plasma doesn’t really, to most people, look any different than LCD, and most can’t tell the resolution difference between HD and SD, until someone points it out. THEN they’re all pros. 😉

The other reason I’m bugging you about it is because, if you’re planning on shooting for HD shows, don’t hold your breath: HD isn’t doing the kind of business the industry thought it was going to, not by a long shot, and industry folks are doubting it’ll be popular until a few more years minimum. The TVs are too expensive, there are too many format wars (especially with the 2 new HD-DVD formats coming out), and few channels come in in HD. On Comcast, the HD signal breaks up all the time, so what’s the point if I miss whole sentences? It’s kind of what happened to the Apple Newton: they were the first to make a PDA, but it was so dang awful that it failed miserably, and it took some years for the industry to recover. This is what happens when the infrastructure isn’t there to back up a product, and people are starting to figure this out, and are holding off on newer tech purchases. Heck, I wouldn’t have figured it would happen, either, but the numbers are there.

Unless you’re shooting for film or direct to TV, HD is gimmick for 5 years.

There are people here in Santa Cruz advertising WEDDING VIDS in HD!

Do they tell them that it will not be in HD when it goes to DVD?

    Ohhhhhhhhhhh Heyaaaallll NO!
    Catch words….DIGITAL…PLASMA…HD…CAREER MINDED…….GOAL ORIENTED….

    Don’t believe the hype!

(ALWAYS 2 YEARS BEHIND, let the others do the R&D).

Waiting for those HVX 200 reviews!
