Shoot in 16:9 or 4:3
Posted by James Brown on October 14, 2005 at 5:43 amWe are shooting a feature on the 100A and ultimately hope to go to film with it. So the question is how should we be shooting in 16:9 or 4:3 even though it is not true 16:9?

October 14, 2005 at 1:40 pmMy suggestion would be to shoot in 16:9 squeeze mode (if you don’t have the anamorphic adapter) even though it’s not true 16:9. You will have the full vertical resolution of the CCD. You loose all the lines of resolution in 4:3 where the black bars are.

October 15, 2005 at 1:58 amyeah, the “SQUEEZE” mode actually looks really good. I have the animorphic adaptor, and I feel that the compromises you have to make when using it, suck so bad that you might as well use the squeeze mode so you can concentrate on your production rather than where you are on your zoom and such. I’ve shot with the Varicam, SDX900 and the SONY 900 all in 24p and obviously the DVX100 squeeze footy is not as sharp, it still looks nice! I check my footy on a 20″ sony CRT, with all the bells and whistles from the component output of a DSR-45, so I’m viewing on a good gear. my 2 cents!

October 16, 2005 at 6:36 amI faced the same question and…shot in 4:3, but framed for 16:9. Some distributers and tv markets may demand 4:3 still and it’s good to have it, even if it’s not framed the best…
For presentaion, we crop the 4:3 and letterbox it. Since the chips in the DVX are not widescreen chips, all it seems to do is crop and enlarge to anamorphic — something you can do yourself in post if you wish.
