    Hi guys,

I’m cutting a feature film that is shooting on both the DVX100 and DVCPRO50. They are supposed to be shooting in the advanced pull down mode. I have captured some of the DVCPRO50 footage in 29.97 with the remove advanced pull down setting on. After capture however, the clips are still 29.97 and when I analyze the pull down pattern, their appears to be two interlaced frames rather than one, suggesting that the footage was not shot advanced. I thought, ok, no problem, I’ll remove the pull down with Cinema Tools, like you do with telecined film. However, no matter what I seem to do, Cinema Tools extracts a 23.98 file that continues to have interlaced frames. I am starting my file on an A frame and everything and have tried both F1-F2, and F2-F1 pull down patterns. No luck, they both contain interalaced frames. After Effects has succeeded where Cinema Tools, has failed, but it completely throws out the timecode, so is not a preferable option. Anyone have any idea what is going on here? Is this material advanced or standard? Why won’t Cinema Tools remove the pull down properly?

    Cheers

    Julian

Sounds like standard. CT is quite dumb when it comes to figuring out which frames to discard. There’s a bunch of different settings so you’ll want to try different combos. Also remember you must supply clips that are no longer than one shot- i.e. it will not work on one whole tape of footage. Every time recording is started and stopped on the camera- that’s one clip.

You’re right. I just heard from production and they’re shooting standard.

In regards to CT, I really don’t know what’s going on. I’m starting a test clip on an A frame. There are no cuts. The clip is not too long and not too short. I’ve tried both pull down patterns F1-F2, and F2-F1. Neither works. There really isn’t anything I can think of left to try in CT. This footage was captured with the remove advanced pull down setting on, could this cause some sort of invisible problem, with the 29.97 standard clip, that is manifesting in CT? I really can’t wrap my head around, what can be going wrong. Meanwhile, I guess I’ll have to do everything manually in After Effects, unless someone has a fix.

There’s also the AA, BB, _CD_ field settings to play with in CT. With those included there can be quite a few different combos to experiment with before resorting to AFX.

Sorry to ask you to spell it out for me… but how do you apply this setting? The Reverse Telecine option has 4 settings that I’m aware of. F1, F2, F1-F2, F2-F1. And within each of those settings you can select a start frame such as AA, BB, BC, CD, DD (in the case of F1-F2). My first frame is an A frame so it should be an AA, yes? My pull down pattern matches F1-F2. So what exactly, should I be setting differently?

Try the different field settings beside AA. I’ve gotten clips to work that way.
