Audio in AE
Posted by Carol Ann on September 17, 2005 at 7:55 amHi there,
I’m very new to AE v6.5 and have place a .wma file in my project but can’t hear any audio. I imported the file and then dragged onto the time line. Can anyone help..why can’t I hear it? Obviously my mute button is off and I can double click on the audio file outside AE and hear it perfectly.
I’m sure there’s a simple explanation 🙂 wrong file type maybe?
Hope you can help

AE dislikes many file types such as mp3 and therefore can have issues with importing in wmv’s etc..
Your beast trying to keep your audio to .aiff and .wav formats. -

September 18, 2005 at 4:01 pmHi there,
I’ve now tried converting to a .wav file and imported it into AE. I’ve dragged it onto the timeline and yet again it’s not playing. When I double click on the .wav file in AE it opens up in a little window with the facility to click on a triangle and listen to it that way. I can see the actual wave format when I twisty down into the file..so I know it’s there..just can’t hear it.
Surely there must be a way to listen to the files ..how else can you time the animations??…is this a glich in AE?
I though it might be some “properties” “settings” “display” type check box I didn’t know about to allow the file to be heard through the project.
Can anyone else please help???…sob.
Regards

September 18, 2005 at 4:40 pmIf you want to hear just the audio, hit the . on the keypad on the right side of your keyboard. While it’s playing, hit * on the keypad to lay a marker. That way you can mark beats, hits, crescendos–whatever you’re wanting to use in the audio for timing. If you want to preview your comp with audio, hit Ctrl+3 or go to Window–>Time Controls to open up your Time Control box. Under the Time Control option of the Time Control box click the little speaker. Then, when you hit 0 on the keypad for a RAM preview, it will include your audio. All of this is covered in the manual, or hit F1 in AE and search the help file for RAM Preview with Audio. It will give you about 7 responses detailing exactly how to do it. Hope this helps.

September 18, 2005 at 4:58 pmAlso, from I’ve found, AE does best with AIFF files. Never use mp3. After Effects is not a fan of mp3 at all. And if the above suggestions don’t work, then make sure your audio is turned on in the comp. Where the little eye is that makes your layer visible/not visible, there will be a speaker box next to it. Make sure it’s enabled or you won’t hear a thing. Let us know if you get it working and welcome to After Effects. May it continue to delight and frustrate for years to come. I love it.
Michael.
