720/30pn and Frame rate 30
what’s the difference between filming 720/30pn or just changing the frame rate to 30? Is it possible to film in 720/24pn and then change the frame rate to 30? I’m trying to match the Canon SD780… it only films HD with a frame rate of 30.
Also, when I change my recording setting from 720/24pn to 720/30pn I suddenly lose audio. What in the settings do I need to change to get audio at 30 fps?

If you are in 720pN24 and change the frame rate to 30, you are in effect, over cranking the footage and you will get slow motion. What you want to to put the camera in 720pN30 mode. This will record 30 (29.97) fps. You can also put the camera in 720p60 mode and change the frame rate to 30, which will shoot 30fps with 2:2 pulldown to get you up to 720p60. I’d stick with 720pN30. It’s much easier.
Dave is right, you will probably have to conform the Canon footage to 29.97. A very easy and fast process in Cinema Tools.

Thanks! I thought whenever anything is called 30 fps, it’s always “technically” 29.97. So wouldn’t the canon camera already be in the correct frame rate?

It depends. Some shoot it, some don’t. Since that’s a real consumer based camera, there’s a chance it’s turly 30.0 fps. You would have to open up a file from it and see.

what about my other question? Why would I not be getting audio when I switch from 720/24pn to 720/30pn?

You should get audio. The only way you won’t get audio is if you are in 720p24N mode and then you switch the frame rate to 30 (that would cause an over-crank and hence no audio). If you switch the recording mode to 30pN, make sure to set the frame rate to default.

well that’s all I’m doing is switching to 720/30pn, not messing with the frame rate. Audio has never worked for me on that setting but all the others have audio… maybe it’s a defect in my camera? 🙁

Could be, but please double check the your frame rate is set to default.

I don’t know if your camera has a VFR feature, but if you have VFR in shooting @ 30pn it will turn off audio. I don’t know this particular camera.
Turn VFR in the menu OFF so everything is native.

I have made that dreaded mistake of shooting in 720/30pn mode, slo-mo with NO audio! It’s not a huge difference when you look at it as it’s only 6fps difference from 24-30fps. Now when you try to match it with 30 or try to sync audio, that’s when you soon realize that you made a HUGE mistake!! You would “assume” that the frame rate would automatically switch over to 30 when you select 720/30pn, but unfortunately it doesn’t, it defaults to 24fps, at least on the first generation of HVX-200, I think they fixed it on the newer model. When you select 720/30pn, you have to manually change the frame rate to 30fps under scene file.
