HVX In SD?
I have a photography background, was planning on buying a dvx100B this week, it’s my first video camera and is to be used mainly for corporate & on location musician interviews and possible low budget music videos and documentaries down the road as well. I could alternately get a used HVX for a few hundred more so it’s tempting. I will mainly be shooting for web usage so primarily I will shoot on tape in SD.
I am wondering if shooting in SD on the HVX how does it compare to the DVX100B. Specifically…
Is the glass on the HVX significantly better than the dvx100B?
How is the sound quality compared to the DVX100B?
Any other significant differences shooting in SD I should be aware of?

It’s not HD?
Spend the few hundred extra for an HD capable camera.
You can shoot SD until you are ready for HD. You can also shoot to P2 cards and shoot dv50 (a higher quality SD than dv) if you really need to work in SD.

…I was speaking about significant differences btwn shooting on the DVX100B in SD versus shooting on an HVX in SD.. That didn’t answer either of my questions but thanks for your comments.

Sory if that came off as snide, but I also went on to say this, which directly answers your questions:

I just wouldn’t limit myself to an SD only camera when for a few hundered dollars more you can get an HD capable camera that also takes nice SD pictures in two different Sd qualities.

My experience is that the SD is better in the HXV. I do agree with Jeremy about spending a little more. That way you can upgrade with minimal expense when you are ready. The HD really is far superior.

Yeah I think it’s solid in SD- especially when you shoot DVCPRO50 to P2. But even in tape mode you’re getting the benefit of bigger chips and better optics than the DVX100. Sound quality is pretty much identical- it’s 16-bit, 48KHZ standard spec. Not much difference there except you get 4 channels- 2 onboard two external on the HVX with the DVX it’s 2 channels only- 1 on 1 out, 2 out or 2 onboard.

Yes, the glass is better to handle bigger and higher resolution chips in the HVX.
The sounds quiality is the same or better. 48k 16 bit audio with XLR inputs.
