720/30p pulldown issues
Posted by Matthew Gellert on September 23, 2008 at 1:49 pmSo We shot some 720/30p footage (in hindsight, we should have shot 30pn). We had troubles importing it into FCP 6. Once we Unchecked the Remove Pulldown option, the footage imported fine. But it imports at the full 60 and plays back looking like 60. So I figure we need to somehow add pulldown to get it “looking” like 30p, but for the life of me I can figure out how to do it. All of the cinema tools seem to be aimed at 24p only. How do I apply a 2:2 pulldown to get my footage looking like 30 again?

September 23, 2008 at 4:07 pmI just shot a test of 720/30p versus 720/30pn. The pulldowned version of 30p is out of sync, I think the video is running roughly 30% faster than it should. the 30pn works great.
I can import the 30p without pulldown and it is in sync at 60.
is there a bug with the 30p pulldown in FCP 6? -

September 23, 2008 at 4:55 pmI use Raylight now, but when I was importing via Log and Transfer I don’t recall any issues with 30p footage.
If you shot 30p then the footage should work just fine in a standard 720p60 sequence… but of course it should have the ‘look’ of 30p over those 60fps.
Are you seeing the smooth motion of 60p, or noticeable (sub-optimal) pulldown frames?
You did not shoot 30pA, correct?
And the camera is not set to a variable frame rate?– – –

September 23, 2008 at 5:33 pmwhen I shoot in 720/30p and capture with the pulldown applied the footage when played back via fcp or even quicktime player is out of sync with the audio and the video appears to be running slightly faster than it should. If I capture without the pulldown applied, it captures and plays back at 60 and it looks and acts like it was shot at 60, ie very fluid.

September 23, 2008 at 5:59 pmI would greatly appreciate another FCP 6 & HVX owner to run a simple test for me:
1.shoot ten seconds of hand claps on camera at 720/30p.
2.log and transfer the shot with the default pulldown engaged.
3.play it back in FCP.
4.tell me if its in sync. -

Question – you’re working in a 720p60 project and matching sequence, right?
I don’t know how you’d manage to see 60 chronological samples per second if it was recorded at 720p30. I can imagine shooting 720p30 with the variable Frame Rate set to 60 – but then you’d have no audio at all and the footage would be double-speed.
720p30 should require NO pulldown removal. It’s intended to ride in a 60p signal. I’d pass it through compressor and output a DVCProHD 720p30 file even tho that’s what you’re supposed to have already.

September 23, 2008 at 6:20 pmits DEF a problem with FCP log and transfer. I just downloaded Raylight and when I used it to transfer the file, it played back perfect in FCP. when I use log and transfer to do this with the SAME file, the movie is out of sync.
someone back me up on this by running my simple test. puhlease.

September 23, 2008 at 6:37 pmIf nobody’s tested it by 6pm pst I can do it.
I have the HPX500 but functionally they’re very much the same.– – –
