Pana HDX900 switched to AJ-1400HD, firewire out to FCP, audio out of sync
Interesting problem. Just did a 4-camera HDX-900 switched shoot with the
HDSDI output of the switcher mastering to an AJ-1400 DVCPROHD tape deck.
Simultaneously fed the firewire output of the deck to FCP Studio live
capture ingest. The master tapes on the deck recorded everything fine and
in-sync. The firewire output to FCP recorded the audio out of sync, from
between 2-14 frames out of sync. Any ideas why? Everything was genlocked and
synced with a very high-end HD flypack, Telecast fiber system, etc. And
again, the tape masters are fine and in sync. Just the FCP ingest is out of
sync. -

how did you get the FW Signal in FCP?
If you go over FW400 connection for example in an AJA Breakout box, you need the magic number 5 frames delay before some time it was 7 frames including a blackburst signal for sync. It sounds to me, that the breakout box feeding the signal was not sync and the FCP has had the wrong settings. When I started with FCP with no sync (4 years ago) I’ve had the same problems. If you have no blackburst generator, you can simply go with an BNC output of a videomachine in the sync of the breakoutbox. This works as well.Rainer

No breakout box was used. The whole production was synced and timed and as I stated, the master feed out from the switcher recorded just fine and in sync to the aj-1400 deck. From the deck, we took a simultaneous feed via firewire 400 to a Mac laptop with external 1-TB drive and did a “capture now”. No Aja box or device, just a straight live capture. Somehow either the firewire output from the deck introduced the audio sync problem or the ingest to FCP introduced the audio sync problem. I’m wondering which one, and if there are any settings in FCP that might affect this. All was set to 1080i-59.94fps in the cameras and in the FCP timeline and project files.

Your audio settings were set to the correct rate? I assume 48K?

Yes, set to 48K. Any other ideas?
