  (HPX-500) 720Pn & 720P explanation

  Hi. I’m new to the P2 card work flow & was just trying to rap my head around the differences between 720P & 720PN (in regards to the HPX-500).

  Is one capable of variable frame rates & the other not? Or are both capable? What is the technical difference between the two? And what are advantages of one or the other?

  I’ve done some reading on it & still haven’t found a subtable explanation. Your response is greatly appreciated.

  Ok so I found this thread & this answered quite a few of my questions. I was still wondering if both are capable of variable frame rates or just the PN format.

  The beauty of shooting in PN besides the storage savings is that when shooting variable frame rate, there’s no other processing that needs to be done. Only the over/undercranked frames are recorded and played back at the frame rate you have shot (24, 25, 30 whatever you’re shooting). You will lose audio when doing this so keep that in mind when shooting. If you shot in P mode, you will keep your audio, but you will have to use the Panasonic Frame Rate Converter form within Final Cut Pro to extract and conform the proper frames. It’s a simple process, just more work involved.
