Transcribing for P2
Hi,
I’m working on a documentary film right now, and we’re shooting with the HVX-200, and I was wondering what other people have done in terms of transcribing the footage. Normally, with Mini-DV, we would make DVDs of the footage, but with HD stuff, I think that we would have to make way too many DVDs to hold all the footage, and compressing it to fit on the DVDS would take way to long. Anyone want to share what they have done in this situation? It would be much appreciated.Thank you

Sounds like you are sending it out. Do you have an AJA card or anything that will play out the time line as SD. If so you could plug that into a cheap dvd recorder and record to dvd off the timeline.

String out your clips on the timeline, add the TIMECODE READER filter. Export a reference QT Movie. Take that into compressor, use a QT 7 Compression codec, adjust the dimensions to be 16:9, like 640×360, or less. Then compress. That is what I did…and I sent it out of house.

How much footage were you converting? How long did it take?

Sabreena, Shane’s method, while a good method, takes forever. not only do you have to render the tc reader filter, you then have to compress. What kind of machine do you have and how much footage do you have?
The less time intensive way is to take all the raw footage clips and use compressor to put the tc on the clips using the “timecode generator” in the filters tab of the Compressor Inpector. this is dependent on Compressor v3 (Final Cut Studio 2). You will end up with a bunch of different clips, but it makes it easy to divide and conquer between multiple people that way. I also suggest compressing to Sorenson3 and not H264 as it is much faster.

Why not play out of the camera into a DVD recorder with the TC playing on screen.

You can use Raylight which reads the mxf data directly. You can instantly open the clips in fcp, add the timecode reader and play out to a DVD recorder in real time. I’ve also just exported the aufio, converted it to mp3 and sent that to the transcriber if t/c notes don’t matter.

That’s what I do and name the Mp3 the same name as the clip. Sounds like Sabreena needs video as well, though.
