lotsa grain…no gain
Posted by Ian Karr on December 20, 2007 at 2:31 amHi,
Can’t really figure out why, but my HVX 200 seems very grainy…even without any added gain. Especially in darker areas. Is this a “feature” of the camera? Anyone else notice this?
I checked all the settings and everything looks normal.

December 20, 2007 at 2:59 amSearch for HVX and grain. Very common in 1/3 chip cameras. You’ll have to use lights.

December 22, 2007 at 6:12 pmThis is certainly not the problem. Many 1/3 inch chip cameras can handle blacks very well. It is not underexposed footage, its any black in the image, for example a black shirt, or car grille, has a lot of noise with the HVX. I am also suffering with this problem. The XL2 doesn’t do this and it is a few years old. It’s very annoying and crushing the blacks shouldn’t be the answer.
Our setup included the movietube so we had a 1.2k HMI and a diva to combat the awful 5 stops of light loss you actually get with the tube, never using it again. Awful combo

December 22, 2007 at 6:35 pmI would love to see a frame grab. In short, yes, the HVX will show slightly more noise than the XL1, it should be nothing significant in my experience.
