We are a multimedia company specializing in the production of royalty free footage. We have a workflow issue that needs to be resolved and everywhere we turn seems to be a dead end. Really hoping that someone here has had a similar problem and has found a solution/workaround and wouldn’t mind sharing their knowledge.

    Here’s our scenario…

We are shooting the bulk of our footage against a green screen on a Panasonic AG-HPX500 P2 camera. The footage is coming out of the camera via sdi and into an Ultimatte 11 compositing device (https://www.ultimatte.com/UltimatteMain/11%20Main.html). From there it is ingested into final cut pro 6 via sdi and a Black Magic Decklink HD Extreme capture card for (hopefully) a live capture.

    Now here’s the problem…

Our preferred capture format is 720p/60 or 720p/50 uncompressed 8 bit but the only format that we can capture live using the above method is 1080i/50 – Apple ProRes or DVCPro. All other formats inform us that there is no video input (yes, when we try to capture 720p in Final Cut the camera is set to the same).

The whole thing is just very frustrating. Any answers/workarounds to my questions or any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Have you monitored the SDI output of the Ultimatte to confirm video out? Minimize the variables to troubleshoot.

We definately have a signal coming out of the Ultimatte hence the 1080i capture. All is good until we try to capture 720p then nada. We have even cut out the Ultimatte and gone straight from the camera (sdi) into the computer (I probably should give specs… Mac Pro 8 core, 16 GB RAM, 4 x 750 GB HD’s) and still no 720p.

Speed and volume is the key to our success which is why we are not ingesting via the P2 cards (way too time consuming converting all those damn MXF files).

    Cheers

When making a system you start at the beginning and establish signal presence at the out put of each device before you move onto the next. So if you have and can monitor the camera with an output of 720, then take that output and plug it inot the Ultimatte. I suspect that your problem lies in the Ultimatte not having the menus for input set to 720 in and 720 out.

    Good luck,

Have you looked into the AJA ioHD?

That card will capture both 720p 60 and 720p 59.94…it wouldn’t be a subtle difference like that would it?

When you are experimenting, what are the camera’s settings and the card’s specific capture settings?

[JezzFush] “Speed and volume is the key to our success which is why we are not ingesting via the P2 cards (way too time consuming converting all those damn MXF files).”

Well, if THAT’s the problem, just stop using FCP’s limited time-wasting, space-wasting import tool! Edit the MXF files directly and bypass all this problem.

Go to https://dvfilm.com/raylight/mac/index.htm and get Raylight. You can then immediately edit your MXF files directly off the P2 cards, for the ultimate in speed and volume.

That’s strange… I attach my HPX500 via SDI to my 17″ production monitor regularly and I’ve never hit upon a format or frame rate it couldn’t display (or the camera wouldn’t output).

But you can’t get 720p out even into FCP? If you wanna give me your settings to duplicate I’ll try it at home tonight.

Are you trying to capture from the Ulitmatte, or from the camera? Your Decklink card cannot cross-convert 1080i to 720P. For that you need a Kona 3 or a Terranex. Perhaps you can set the Ultimatte to 720P?
