P2 log and import question
Hello all. First time poster, here. I’m curious to learn how people are logging their P2 files before importing as QT files into FCP. Is it possible to set in and out points and create multiple, discrete clips from within the same P2 clip? Is this something P2 Log was designed for? I would like to have more control over what I actually import and, ideally, be able to create some brief log notes for the browser prior to import. I’m running FCP 5.0.4 Thanks for any and all help.

First, you really need to update your version of FCP, 5.1.2 is where P2 became stable. FCP 6 takes it a bit further. But yes can do different version of the same clip just like you can do with a tape. Just about anything you can do in FCP’s capture you can do in Log and Transfer (what it is called now.
The recommended work flow is to always copy your P2 entire folder structure to a hard drive (this is your raw “tapes”) then do the capture.

Thanks for the response. So, I really need to upgrade? I purchased FCP as a student and Apple will not allow upgrade to FCP6 with an academic lisence. What stability issues do I face running 720p 24pn through 5.0.4? Back to importing files: how do I not capture/import footage I know is unuseable? For example: a ten minute take from a sit down interview where the first two minutes is me framing my question to the subject. How would I set in and out points in that clip to just capture the subject’s response? And yes, I am backing up to an external drive prior to importing. Any guidance appreciated.

You can’t with 5.0.4…that imports FULL CLIPS ONLY. FCP 5.1.1 changed things so that you could then set IN and OUT points, rename clips and preview them…all sorts of things.
SO…options are pony up for FCP 6 (since FCP 5.1 isn’t available, and was ONLY sent to customers who had sent in their FCP disks to be replaced with the newer version) or Pay $100 for P2 Log and do it that way.
P2 log is cheaper…

Thanks, Shane. 5.0.4 can’t do it. Okay. I feel better. Sort of. P2 log looks like, on the Panasonic web site, it will only give you one in point and one out point per P2 clip. True? In FCP 6 can I chop up a P2 clip into multiple, discrete clips, prior to capture/import, as if it were a tape? If I did pony up to FCP 6 wil my rig handle it? dual 2.3 power pc, 2.5 gigs ram, ATI 9650. I really appreciate the help.

P2 Log can, I believe, do that….multiple selects. But e-mail them to varify.
And yes, your system can handle FCP 6. I have it running on my Dual 2Ghz G5.
