What do clients want? Files?
Adding a question to an earlier post from June 7:
“Discovery and the HPX-500”I live in Spain and my use of a P2-camera would be 50% documentaries where the P2 workflow wouldn’t be a problem, BUT the other 50% of my jobs would be short service shoots for US or UK clients. Up to now you’ve always handed over a tape when wrap. And the client leaving the country the day after.
Will I have to do as Shane describes working with Discovery:
Make tapes of the P2 footage, and deliver the tapes?Goran

Sure you can hand over a hard drive with the MXF files. Or a DVD with QuickTimes. Or you could rent a DVCPROHD tape deck and playout to tape if they insist on tape. But data centric workflow is where it’s at. Why reintroduce an expensive, linear tape deck that has to be rented and captured slowly and painfully when you’ve already got clips ready to be ingested.

Yes that’s what I hope is going to happen. But in real life, I’m asking P2 camera owners that shoot and deliver footage:
Aren’t clients normally too conservative for that, receiving the material on a disk drive or files on a DVD? Don’t they prefer tape?Yes, tape is soon history, but I remember when I wanted desperatly to sell my BetaSP 1999 thinking that it was too late to sell it. I used it quiete a lot for five more years….

PS. My experience here in Spain is that most clients ask for HD-cam, on tape, and it makes me unsure about buying a HDX500.

It depends on the client- and you bill them. If they want HDCAM and aren’t expecting to shoot HDCAM cameras, you can easily get P2 dubbed to HDCAM at a post house. Build that into your price and you’re good to go.
