Can anyone suggest a compression recipe for exporting HD files for client viewing?
I have about 90 minutes of raw footage files, audio and video, captured from an HVX 200. I need to compress and get them onto a DVD. I’ve created a sequence in FCP and broken it into 20 minute sections. When I start my exports, even at 180 x 120, the predicted export times are unworkable. Thanks!!!!

First you say RAW HD FILES, then you say exporting at 180×120. What are you doing exactly?

You cannot send the raw files, for if the client does not have FCP installed on their system, they will not be able to see them. Best bet is to use compressor and compress the files to H.264…which will take a while. Or to make an SD DVD by using compressor to compress a DVD format…90 min to 150 min DVDs possible.

Bad grammar on my part. I’m not trying to export the raw HD files to the client. I should have phrased it by saying I’m trying to create a viewing tool for the client to look at the raw footage files.

Exactly to your point my goal is an SD DVD. Generally once I have exported QT movies I just build a simple screening DVD in iDVD. I’m not sure how big the resulting files will be so I broke the footage into separate blocks which will become chapters on the iDVD. If I’m on the right track would you be able to help me streamline my export specs for auido/video? I really apprciate your help. Michael

I’m currently exporting a test at the following settings
    VIDEO SETTINGS:

    H.265
    best quality
    320×240
    15fps
    key frame rate=24
    frame reordering is on
    encoding in multi-pass mode

    AUDIO SETTINGS:
    Audio is being compressed via
    MPEG 4
    Mono
    44.1 1

Why not just play the video out of FCP into a DVD recorder? You can even add the timecode reader filter in FCP and you’ve got a window dubbed DVD. You can make simple chapters if you want to take the time to do that. I just made hours of timecode dubs this way.

If you want to save even more time and not have to import all your footage at the start, you can use Raylight, which will allow FCP to handle all the MXF files WITHOUT importing them. Raylight is for Mac or PC. Here’s the link https://www.dvfilm.com/raylight/

Can you please explain a little more about playing out of FCP straight into a DVD recorder? This is the first I’ve heard of it. How does the hookup work?

Thank you Shane and John for your suggestions. I really appreciate your input. I’m exporting them this time around but I’m going to integrate your suggestion John about playng the entire sequence out to a DVD recorder in the future. That makes a lot of sense to me. Michael
