P2 to firewire drives
Posted by John Putch on July 27, 2007 at 5:30 amshane or anyone,
can i use a card reader to get the P2 media off the card to a standard firewire drive for transport? If i don’t want to use a P2store to get the footage off the card and I don’t have a macbook pro, how would i do that.?
thanks.

July 27, 2007 at 5:55 amYou can connect a firewire drive to the camera and dump the footage directly from the camera to the drive. But since I don’t shoot and don’t own a camera, I can’t tell you the specific menu settings to do that.
Other than that, you need a P2 store or some other card reader and a computer to offload. The P2 store in essence is a card reader and hard drive….and that is the only thing I know of that does that. The only P2 readers are built in on the Powerbook G4s or PC laptops, or the ones that panasonic designs. Or the new Duel system adapter for the MacBook.

don’t use firewire connection they are unreliable!
You need a laptop and double backup the content on two seperate drives.Rainer

July 27, 2007 at 2:14 pmI just saw that Panasonic has introduced the P2 Gear which is a field playback unit. It can connect to an external HD so you can store P2 data on it.
Here’s a link to a story about it https://www.eventdv.net/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=12398

July 27, 2007 at 2:16 pmThe P2 card reader with a HD attached from Panasonic costs more, than a whole laptop.
