    Hi,

Am wondering whether you can store directly to an external 2.5″ FW HD as you shoot in place of the P2 cards.

Or do you really need Firesotre (or the other similar product with a different brand)

    Has anyone tried this?

If you do need a firestore, what’s the difference between that and just a plain old 2.5 phantom powered FW HD?

    Thanks.

You really need the Firestore. There were other products that were supposed to come out, but they haven’t been as successful. Cineporter and…uh…something else.

Without those, you’d need to route the signal thru a laptop to a drive. You need some sort of processor and software controlling this.

i’ve only tried the “record to laptop-attached firewire drive” twice. it worked the first time as a test with plenty of extra bandwidth, so i took it to an interview to get 1080p24 (over 60) into Final Cut. i only have 4GB P2 cards. during the interview it dropped frames constantly and i couldnt figure out why because it worked just fine during the initial test. i switched to 720p24 and used the 4GB cards to get through the interview. i havent tried it since. i’m going to buy (and rent) a bunch of 16GB P2 cards instead.

i’ve heard that the DV Rack and PC laptop system is great, especially in getting a nice HD preview, but i think i’m going to stick with the cards considering the places my company tends to shoot – mountains, deserts, definitely not studios.

I use a 120 GB CitiDisk HD (Specifically for the HVX200, half the price as firestore but cannot play back footage to camera if there is no P2.) with and without P2’s and my explanation in recording straight to HD is that the feed from the FW is a straight feed (no 24P available – missing meta data). Also in SD, if the LCD is set to squeeze or letterbox, this will get recorded onto the hardrive files with no P2 is present.

I tried recording to P2 cards using an spx800 and have numerous dropped frames; 24p and 30p. I also tried recording to a PC, using DV Rack HD (latest version) and aqain, dropped frames. Using DVCpro50.

Any ideas where this problem comes from ?

    Thanks,

    Patrick
