    Hi,

Maybe this is something that people know but I had a problem with importing some clips yesterday.
It happened when I was logging footage in FCP 5.1.3 and naming files in NAME field in Import Panasonic P2 window.
I usually leave original random name at the end and name clip at front according to slate or according to what is happenning.
Two clips did not want to import and convert to QT even when there was no problem with them. I tried P2LOG Pro and I could export without problem. Appeared that I can only have about 31 characters in NAME field and if name is any longer that clip won’t import.
Today somebody else had same exact problem and I was able to help and there was no clips missing.
Please make a note of that if you are importing P2 material.
    I hope this is helpful.

I wouldn’t want to do more than 31 characters…even that number is too much. Keep names simple.

Yes, of course but this was 3 kids (A kid, B kid and C kid playing). 3 names plus “playing” and original 6 characters name is too long. When you name QT file you can drag it to browser in FCP and it will show up. It won’t show up if you try to name it in Import Panasonic P2 window.
Funny that it happened to another person day after me. I am not an editor so I am sure there will be more people wondering why some clips are not importing.
I wrote this to help those people and warn others that like detail description of their P2 clips.

I’ve had this issue as well – took a little bit to figure out what was up. The issue with wanting to make the names longer than 31 characters is that there’s no way of seeing the scene information and take # included with the clip name… the p2 log makes viewing the scene and take info harder to see at once. Kind of a bummer to have such an arbitrary-seeming limitation. I agree that keeping clip names simple is a good rule of thumb sometimes, but with interview content, I really would like free rein to have names truly represent what the response was to make sorting through all of the comments as precise as possible.

Oh well… I just go back through and rename the clips once they’re in FCP.

Article says 255 characters for clip name which is super long but it still looks like 31 characters is longest for FCP 5.1.4
