Finally I have an HD job
Posted by Lars Wikstrom on October 25, 2006 at 2:14 amSince I got my camera every job has been in SD and the end result of this new project will be will be SD for cable playback. Normally I would just shoot in SD since that has been great, but, the store that I am creating a commercial for sells only High End HD TV’s. When the commercial is finished I will transfer it back to the camera and take it to them to plug into a TV for final approval.
My question now is 720p or 1080i? I will have to scale it down to SD later and I am not sure how that will look if I shoot in 1080i. So I am lookign for some of your thoughts before I shoot it next week.
Thanks much

October 25, 2006 at 2:59 amWhat kind of system is this going to be edited on, more importantly what kind of storage? Given the current state of P2 cards, 720p24N seems to be about the right combo of card space, bandwidth, and great looking images. If 24p is too much 720p30N isn’t a bad compromise. I like the look of 24p, some people find it a bit much. Shooting 1080 will drastically reduce your record times on P2. If P2 cards were huge and cheap, I would shoot 1080. Do you have a P2 store? What are your transfer options going to be in the field?

October 25, 2006 at 4:37 amWe are still trying to find an HD-DVD burner so we can actually produce HD discs for a 5 screen plasma show.
We are experimenting with the JVC HD DVD player with mixed results. For now we are playing SD DVD’s.
We are going to try WMV HD playing from a buffalo player…not the greatest but it’s
a little sharper than SD DVD. We are shooting and editing in 720 24p. -

October 25, 2006 at 4:58 amJeremy, might I recommend this company. https://www.adtecinc.com/
I use them and own 15 edje units. The sole purpose for these units are to decompress Mpeg 2 files. Adtec in the last year has relased a number of HD players that use the new H.264 codecs. I saw them at NAB and the HD stuff is very cool and great for playback on plasma screens. Check them out.
As for my other question I should have given more info on my gear, sorry. I edit on a G5 tower but I have a Powerbook in the feild and transfer my P2 footage to that while on shoots. I edit with FCP and only FCP. My mind tells me that I should shoot 720p since I can scale it down to SD but I also know the camera can shoot 30p in 1080i mode. It still confuses me shooting in a P format in an i stream if I got that right.
My concern is interlacing when I scale down.

October 25, 2006 at 3:44 pmHey Lars, that was izoneguy that apparently wants some info on HD DVD burners. Thanks for sending that link to him.
Don’t worry about scaling down for SD DVD. If you are shooting 24p, I suggest making a 24p SD DVD (or a progressive 30p DVD). That way you won’t have to worry about interlacing, your DVD will look better on computer screens, and the DVD player will handle any interlacing that needs to happen, just like Hollywood. If you need to layoff an SD master, I suggest picking up a Kona series card that can down-convert in real time (the LHe is the cheapest and does not feature up-convert). It’s the best, most cost effective way as the down-conversion is done in hardware and looks fantastic. That way you can also color correct your HD material in SD in real time while watching the down-convert. If you do not have any of those capabilities, I would export your movie as a self contained quicktime and take it to a dub house/editing facility that can layoff both an HD and SD master for you.

October 26, 2006 at 1:27 amLars,
I here my solution/ thoughts.. (i have about two months with my HVX200 so im no pro with it yet however) iv specifically got it for commercials iv been shooting in 24pn mode and my clients not to mention the Stations Love the look. I use PN because i have only one 8gig card so i get about 22 minutes of shooting time should be about right. if i had two cards i would Stick to shooting in 720p 24 or 30p. For an other project i pluged my cam to my quad via firewire and final cut pro and got 1080 amazing looking footage in a studio. however with your powerbook you can pull it off in the store. for hard drive space i used a 300 gig lacie firewire 800 drive worked ok however not so good just ok in editing once you start to add graphics ect. im sure i need a esata drive or something faster.
editing straight from the main hard drive works amazing however i understand its NOT RECOMENDED.SO as for transfering HD footage back to your P2 so your client can see on there HD tv.. IS THIS POSSiBLE?
Also i would say It does not look pro to take your camera back to play the spot and two if you print to mini dv tape you will lose so much of your look especially on an hd tv.heres how i impressed my clent with an hd look. after your edit, burn your footage to a HD DVD from DVD Studio Pro.
you will have it on a DVD that more than likely if you gave this to your client they still will never be able to see it however off a mac book we connected to there HD montior Via DVI to HDMI played the disk and there EYES where amazed this also worked off my mac mini thats connected to our 23 in Sony HD motitor. so try this with your powerbook should work im not sure?? .. make a second disk SD DVD from HVX to final cut on HD time line to Compresser mpeg2 then DVD Studio your disk should look WAY BETTER in 16.9 SD DVD than off an sd mini dv equivalant camera.P.S If you down mind i me asking or anyone out there!.. now that i own the camera, iv asked the question before, could you really get away with trying to charge more for an hd to sd project than SD with mini dv equivalant cameras.. YES the HVX is amzing on what it produces but could you?? would you? do you? charge more to turn it on?

October 26, 2006 at 7:41 amYou don’t want to use Edje’s. They are the bottom of the line work horses and don’t do HD Your looking at the Soloist unit which is HD I think. My edje’s I bought for $1200 each with a large order. $1500 by them selfs. I saw them at the NAB and they are very cool.

October 26, 2006 at 7:49 amWhen I finish the job it will go on to an SD DVD but the version for the station I allways take that down on a Jump Drive and load the QT file into their Avids.I shot some test footage today and I will play around with the different versions from the camera and see what works the best before I do it. Again my concern is not shooting in HD or dropping it off at the station It’s HD to SD conversion and it 1080i 30p will work or just shoot at 720p 60p.
I guess I will find out.
Thanks for the insight.

Yes, it’s possible, and depending on what your editing platform is it can be downright easy. EDIUS supports exporting directly back to the card in proper MXF camera-playable format. So does AXIO.
If using FCP or Avid you can export back to the card by doing a “print to video” process, and using the camera to capture the incoming firewire data stream.
