  Cutting different 720 formats

  I have a client that wants to shoot with the Varicam on some stuff and the HVX200 on others. I think this is only worth doing if we shoot in 720 24pN with the 200 in order to facilitate longer shoot times and Hard drive space. Has anyone combined footage in the 720 24pn footage from the 200 with 720 24p footage with the Varicam? Are there post concerns when going back to tape for a master or in editing on a timeline?

  If you’re in Final Cut Pro with access to a 1200A deck- this is a very easy, simple workflow that should give you great results.

  Hi Noah,

  Thanks so much for your help on this. I am trying to understand how FCP will handle both formats together. Will the 1200A export to FCP in 24Pn or does FCP have a way of dealing with the two formats (Varicam 24p and 24pn) that that deals with issues of pulldown and lost frames etc. I am somewhat of a neophyte when it comes to post and am trying to avoid a potential workflow problem for my client.

  what you do is capture the Varicam footage and bring in as 23.98 to match the HVX’s 23.98 it shoots in 720/24pN. Then edit both in a 24p timeline. When you play out to the 1200A over Firewire, pulldown is automatically reinserted. Shane should chime in on this in a minute as he’s done a ton of HVX/Varicam combos.

  A catch-out that I recently discovered is that shooting PN does not capture audio (in variable framerates at least) whereas P mode does. a batch conversion of 720 50p footage in cinema tools was very quick and straightforward and to my eye the results were very good plus it had wild audio played back at the correct speed in FCP.
