I just had a three hour conversation at one of Americas top sales/rental houses regarding P2. The bottom line is that the P2 store hard drive does not work reliably. Two of these things went down on one persons shoot with in 36 hours of each other. Panasonic does not know what is wrong with the first one that went down. I mentioned that I have not heard that this is an issue and all the eyes rolled.

The eyes rolled again when I mentioned Firestore 100HD, with someone offering, if you would like to try it you might be the first to get it to work RELIABLY.

Was I caught in an alternative Universe for the past few hours?

Needless to say our work flow can no longer include the P2store system.

For my taste, if a system does not work as well as an alternative (tape) its worth hesitating using it.

    So you don

I own and use a P2 store all the time without incident. I have also rented and used the FS100 without any problems.

It always comes down to the operator experience and the abilty (or lack of) to follow the directions.

P2 Store is about as rock solid as you can get. Where there is a problem it is due to operator error. No one wants to admit that and so when it is turn back in at the rental house, it is always the equipment that malfunctioned.

For those that give due respect to the workflow and pay attention, the problems are not there.

The people who were operating the P2store were indeed new to the thing and perhaps unknowing in many ways.

Is there one operator error that is most common with the P2store thing? Are there things to be avoided that might not be obvious?

Read this document and if you follow the instructions, you will not have any problems.

[Blub06] “Thanks but, I think its in Japanese…”

Chrris, it is in English, Japanese and Chinese. The first section is in English, since it is not a very complicated product, it doesn’t need 84 pages to explain.

    Good Luck,

I don’t have a P2 Store, but have used the P2 Cards and FireStore FS 100 for months with a HVX 200. Our FireStore is in use at least 1 to 2 hours a day. The only problem I had with the FireStore was, I’ll admit it, “OPERATOR ERROR” but Focus Enhancements walked me through it.

We have had no problems with the P2 workflow, except it takes time to transfer GIGS of material and a lot of hard drives to hold it all. If Firestore could record long clips without breaking them up in 2 minute clips that would be great, but you can put them together in QT if want or FCP.

Everybody should consider what Serious Magic is about to unleash with their HVX200 version of DV Rack. For the cost of one firestore you can buy a hugely powerful PC laptop AND their software. This gives you a gorgeous, calibrated monitor and every scope under the sun, AND it records your clips in one of about six formats to either internal or external hard drives. Features include zooming, split screen, two zebras (light and dark), flip screen for prime lenses, naming clips, and audio waveform monitors just for starters. I could go on and on because this is the greatest no brainer in a landscape that is usually full of brain scratchers. It’s currently in late Beta stages. Truly awesome.
