Firestore FS-100 problems with Final Cut Pro
After my glowing report on the FS-100 and the HVX-200 working flawlessly, I did discover a very annoying bug in the workflow interface between the two. It seems upon import of continuous shots (the Firestore breaks the long shots down into 2.18 minute clips), there is a one to two frame gap between clips when you import them into a FCP timeline. Depending on the type of footage you are shooting, and whether or not you are needing audio from the shoot, this causes a very noticeable audio glitch/click between each clip on the timeline, and if there is a lot of movement in your clip, a noticeable stutter caused by the missing frame(s). The tech people at Focus Enhancements have confirmed that this is a problem, and they are supposed to release a firmware upgrade to fix this anomaly soon.

You are so correct and soo many people have denied that this exists. I too am in hell because of this. We shot nearly 9 hours of interviews with the FS100 before we discovered this and are really up a tree trying to fix it.

Is data lost when recording or does it get lost in the process of importing into FCP?

I think Matt from Focus explained it well to me earlier in that it appears to be a Final Cut issue with the flagged frames being detected when importing and selecting the “delete duplicate frames” in the import window. It doesn’t always happen, which can be frustrating, but all this, I’m afraid. is to be expected with new technology and multiple vendors. The more I use the Firestore the more comfortable I am with it. I do not delete the original media until I’ve checked all file switch-over points. That will change. I just got caught in a big, long shoot in harsh conditions with a new out-of-the-box device. I had not planned it that way. Originally the Firestore and Citidisk were to be delivered in Feb/March which would have given us all time to de-bug things. As it was. I received my Firestore 4 days before leaving for a three and a half week shoot. We had a terabyte of storage and it turned out not to be enough so we had to start deleting original, backed up P2 and Firestore files to make room for the last week and a half’s shoot material. I still get an ocasional drop-out. I think that is a bigger problem at the moment for me than the dropped frames as I can re-import the material or use the Panasonic frame rate converter if all else fails, but dropped frames are there to stay. I am waiting for Panasonic to ship new units to my vendor and I am going to get a replacment unit in hopes of no more problems. I get freezes in the menus and other random stuff but I still believe in the product and the technology.
