I accidently imported the P2 footage twice into my laptop. I was supprised to see that it didn’t replace the clips or have the computer even say “There are Duplicate clips, do you want to replace?” instead it imported and and put a 1 after every clip 000AB and 000AB1.

I’m guessing it dosen’t over write clips because the camera can reuses names again in the future? or is that wrong?

You mean Import into FCP, correct? I did that a couple times as well. Not difficult with as much footage as I had.

If that is the case, that has nothing to do with the camera. As far as I know, it won’t use the same number twice.

Ya that was importing into FCP but it put the footage into the same Capture Scratch folder but put a 1 after every duplicate item. I would have thought it would have over writen the files. Is if FCP that is giving it the 1 after the name or something with the P2 import function that Panasonic built in in to the importer?

FCP is adding the number. Just like it adds itto UNTITLED (UNTITLED1, UNTITLED2) when people don’t log their footage and just CAPTURE NOW. And just like it does when you log your footage. Notice that after you log a clip MAN ON BIKE, the next clip defaults to MAN ON BIKE1…

Yes I have noticed it. So your telling me the files that are on the P2 card are not the same file names that are given to the qt converted clips in FCP. FCP is generating a 5 digit code for each of the clips that come off the card?

[doka15] “So your telling me the files that are on the P2 card are not the same file names that are given to the qt converted clips in FCP.”

No…I am not saying that at all. if the name on the card is 0002F3…then the imported file will have the same name. BUT, if you import it again, FCP will notice that that name already exists and tag the “1” at the end so that it has a different name and will not cause confusion.

[doka15] “FCP is generating a 5 digit code for each of the clips that come off the card?”

No. The card produces that number. FCP just carries over that number as it wraps the file in a quicktime wrapper.

O’OK that is clear now. Now I usderstand what you are saying with regards to the FCP naming convention. Mike, Mike1, Mike2 and so on.

    Thanks Shane,
