I have been following the HVX saga for some time, with high interest in purchasing a camera for indie projects and documentaries. My wife and I edit DV on a dual 2 gig G5 with FCP Studio and LaCie 500 gig FW 800 video drive. I just got the universal crossgrade to 5.1. My wife needs a laptop for presentations w/imbedded video. Is there a developing workflow using the Pana HVX-200 in 720P 24P or 60P for 24P playback (chromakey, slo-mo, miniatures work) that can involve a mobile solution using the MacBook Pro 17″? I think the fastest interface to a video HD available on the MacBook Pro is FW 800, and per Mike of HDforindies that is the limiting factor to editing DVCPRO HD or other HD codecs on the 17″. Is it practical to capture direct from the camera (FW 400?) through the Pro 17″ to an external HD (FW 800?), or do you need P2 cards, Firestore, CinePorter, etc. for file transfer? I realize that AE and Photoshop are not yet on board for Universal Binary.

Thanks to everybody over the last year + for the great forum, especially Jan and the hosts!

Test what you want to do. Test it before you get into your location setup and find that it won’t work.

Yes, you can capture via firewire thru FW 400 to a FW800 drive. BUT, you cannot capture 24PN at that point. You will be capturing at 60fps. You might get a 24P look, but at the 720p60 setting. And I believe that the FW400 and FW800 ports are still on the same bus so that might cause issues like dropped frames. As I said, test it thoroughly before you get into the field and see if it will work.

If so, report back so that we have that information as well, and can inform others as to the success or failure of the venture.

    Hi,

Yes you can capture via firewire as Shane mentioned, you can also record to the P2 card in 24PN and then transfer those files by firewire. You could get 20 minutes on the card and it would take about 4 minutes to transfer from the camera. This would save you the step of having to run the Frame Rate Converter.

One thing is for sure on the camera, there is more than one way to work the workflow.

    Hope this helps,

    Jan
