I’m looking into HD Log for my Mac. The last shoot I went on we shot 800 GB of footage on 4GB P2 cards (we were in Russia for 10 days and London for a week). So needless to say we had a lot of footage. I was a little dissapointed that I couldn’t review footage before bringing it into FCP. Also, if we shot an 8 minute clip, and only wanted 30 seconds of it, I had to import the whole 8 minute clip. We were constantly downloaded, erasing and swapping cards so we couldn’t preview off the cards or camera.

I have messed about with HD Log but am not sure how usefull it is going to be. It looked like I could set in and out points on media to be exported to FCP but I have failed in my attempts to do so. Does amyone have any experience or opinions on this software?

    Thanks in advance.

The ability to export pieces of a P2 clip has not been implemented yet, but it should appear soon, along with a few other things.

Saw Sony’s XDCAM logging and capture software(Beta version) in a demo by Apple last night. Proxies, in and out points, really slick. You can import stuff and work on FCP at the same time.
Panasonic, please get a move on and bring this stuff to market. Sony is offering this for free. Why should P2 users have to pay for HD Log, when
Sony is offering their interface for free?

And why should Sony users have to get stuck with MPEG-2 intraframe editing at 35Mbits while Panasonic shooters get to have full DVCPROHD at 100Mbits? It cuts both ways. HD Log is a solid alternative solution if you need it and they’ve been nice enough to lower their prices to get people’s business.

I’ve been impressed with its utility.

My original version didn’t support 24pn, but the developer provided an almost update.

I intend to write a review, but am waiting for the latest update to bring it current.

It isn’t the least expensive utility out there. However, its “utility” is what will sell it for Mac users.

Because they are in the business of providing for their customer’s needs. The codec argument does not dismiss Panasonic’s need
to address their entire Apple interface situation as rapidly as possible.

James- what is this situation? You can edit P2 on FCP right now period. Is it as slick as Sony’s utility? No. But does it get the job done? Yes.

If Sony had not made their own utility there would be zero support for XDCAM HD in FCP so viewing this as a premium is off the mark. If you want things as robust as the Sony utility with P2- you need to buy HDLog. Asking Panasonic for free add-on software just because Sony provided something similar, but critical to the use of their gear for free is not really fair.

There’s rarely parity among competitors, if there were we’d all buy the same exact camera and there wouldn’t be a need for forums like this to make comparisons. And at any rate, you should be telling Apple what you really want because they make FCP, not Panasonic nor Sony.

    I can confirm their responsiveness.
I’m currently working on a review as well, and they fixed a problem with 1080i50 in just two days.

[James Mulryan] “Sony is offering this for free.”

Considering that Sony’s selling their XDCamHD camera for around 2X the price an HVX200 w/ memory cards (w/out a lens!), they’d better offer it for free!

I guess I depart a little bit from Noah’s position here.

HD Log is, from all views, a pretty slick utility that portends to even get slicker.

But if Panasonic is providing basic p2 viewer for the PC, in my view, it has some responsibility to bring its Mac users on parity with its PC users.

I’ve read some justification that Panasonic is not in the software business.

That rings a little hollow because apparently it is in the software business due to its bundled PC only p2 viewer.

C’mon Panasonic. Apple has supported the DVCProHD program for more than a year or so.

PC NLEs are still not even close.

It would be appropriate, in my view, for Panny to develop an on parity P2 viewer for the Mac . . . . .

or perhaps send all us Mac users a free 4 Gb p2 card.

Yes, the company is very responsive. They added Cyrillic support to HDLog in a matter of days. And please keep in mind that the app isn’t simple P2 viewer but a very powerful logging tool. I wish it had better interface though.
