720 24PN vs 1080 24PA
It has been suggested (by a local post-production house) that there is no distinguishable difference between footage shot at 720 24PN and upconverted to 1080 and footage shot at 1080 directly. We are posting to a 1080 HDCam end product.
Can anyone confirm this from actual tests? Of course I would like to shoot 720 24PN to maximize space on the P2 cards rather than 1080.
What method of upconverting from 720 24PN would be reccommended:
Resize in FCP 5.04/5.1 (requires rendering)
Hardware up-res – i.e. Teranex (real-time)
Other: ____________________? -

I can confirm this.
We shot 720p24 with the varicam, and also 24PN with the HVX. I upconverted by dropping the sequence into a Kona 3 10-bit 1080psf timeline running at 23.98, resized and rendered. We then output to HDCAM using the Kona 3 (at a post facility) for engineering tests at the network, and it passed with flying colors.
No Terranex box. But that is another option.

Thank you for your response. Can you describe the step by step process of re-sizing in FCP? We are using FCP 5.04 with a Decklink HD card.

-Open your sequence.
-Hit APPLE-A to select every clip. Hit APPLE-C to Copy.
-Go to the Easy Setups and chose the online resolution you want. For example, I chose Kona 3 10-bit Uncompressed 1080p24 at 23.98.
-Create a new sequence. This sequence will now have the settings you just chose in the Easy Setups.
-Hit APPLE-V to Paste the clips into this sequence. Everything should still be highlighted.
-Go to the MODIFY menu and select SCALE TO SEQUENCE and all the clips will resize to fit the current sequence.
-Render. make DARN SURE you are rendering to a drive that has plenty of space.Shane

We are using the HVX on Monday so I thought I’d test the 720 24PN vs. 1080 24PA – using the ‘scaling’ method you suggested. My results are as follows:
1080 24PA via Cinema Tools 3.0.3 Reverse Telecine yields slightly higher resolution.
I was able to do a very controlled test in the following manner:
Set up a resolution chart (line pairs) in a lock-off shot
Shoot 1080 24PA
Shoot 720 24PNImport the p2 data into FCP 5.04
Reverse Telecine the 1080 24PA footage in Cinema Tools to remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown
Create a 1080 23.98 DVCProHD sequence in FCP
Drop the Reverse Telecine 1080 24PA footage onto the timeline
Drop the 720 24PN footage onto the timeline
In the ‘Modify’ menu select Scale to SequenceRender the sequence
Compare frames on a Sony MultiFormat 23″ HD-SDI Monitor
Although the scaled 720 24PN material looked very good, the 1080 footage was clearly higher resolution in the ‘line pair chart’.
On Monday I will post some stills of my test on COW P2 forum . . .
