  • Tape question on lubricated/none-lubricated

Posted by Nigel on May 4, 2006 at 10:30 am

    I have a HVX200 and a JVC GY-HD101E. For the Panny I’m using DVM63MQ Master quality tapes.

Question: is it okay to use these in the JVC also or should I use JVC tapes. The reason I ask is that I remember from years back Sony used a lubricant on their tapes and Panny did not. I don’t know if the Panny and JVC systems work differently i.e. one lubricated and one not and if I used Panny tapes in the JVC it might damage the cameras heads?

    Advice greatly appreciated.

It’s best to use the tapes recommended in your owner’s manual if such a recommendation is made for the JVC.

It has been my understanding that all tapes are lubricated. Some use dry lube , like the Panasonic Master Quality, and some use wet lube, like the Panasonic “Pro” quality. Problems occur when you change tape brands or lube types because of the differing chemical compounds used and their possible incompatibility.
I also use the DVM63MQ in my DVX-100 and plan on using them in my new HVX-200 . I live in dry, dusty Arizona and imagine that the “dry” lube might pick up less dust. I have no verification that this notion is correct.,

All Pansonic tapes a Dry lube. I know we had initially thought there was a difference but then about 2 years ago, some communication from the factory made it more clear. All Panasonic tapes are Dry Lube.

    Thanks Jan for the clarification.
What is the difference then between the “Pro” quality and the ‘Master” quality tapes?
