Newbie HVX200 P2 Question…
Posted by Rocco Rocco on January 17, 2006 at 7:19 pmObviously the specs on the Panasonic HVX200 blew me away, and the idea of shooting 720 or 1080 *P* at $6000 sounds too good to be true. Apols if this is too basic a question, and been answered before, but I’m looking for clarification.
I was told by a rep that you can only shoot High Definition if you record onto a P2 chip. And you can only shoot basic DV (DVCAM) if you use the tape. Is this right? So you have to fork out thousands more for the chips, and they obly hold a few Gigs? Somethings not adding up here… Thanks for any input.

January 17, 2006 at 7:23 pmRead through any of thethread here in the last two weeks for a primer.
HD only records to the (very low capacity) P2 drives.
DV (NO DVCAM) to tape.Ita a DV camera with HD capabilities (limited recording to P2 (PCMCIA cards specially designed by Panasonic, NOt off the shelf).
You should search the archives and read through the MANY MANY posts that are already here.

January 17, 2006 at 8:52 pmNot true. There are a number of 3rd party hard drive solutions either out or coming soon. You can record HD
to P2 cards *or* directly to a hard drive, like the Firestore, for example. And yes, you *should* read some posts, it’s
been discussed over and over again.

You need a specialized and expensive solution like like the FireStore device to record to a hard drive. Not just any hard drive will work.

January 17, 2006 at 8:59 pmSorry,
I was speaking inthe context of exactly what is offered by Panasonic and not third party solutions such as the Firestore whos product will be arriving sometime later this year.
These firestore devices will make much more sense than P2 medi which is already no longer being supported in major laptop manufacturing and you could buy a ONE firestores for the price of ONE P2 card.
The firestore has ten times the capacity of a P2 media card.

January 17, 2006 at 9:40 pmNow if they could just get one of those cute little 1″ drives to hold 200gigs and spin at 15,000RPMs,
*that* would be a hard drive solution I could get behind. 🙂
Even though I’m looking forward to the reduced weight of the HVX (compared to the big rigs I usually
shoot with), I’m still not thrilled with having to lug something along with the camera (end of whine).

Again, yes and no.
The new Apple MacBook Pro utilizes Express/34 cards which are smaller than p2 cards.
The existing non Intel 15 and 17 inch laptops, however, still will utilize a PC card slot that will accept the p2 cards.
Same with Wintel laptops.

January 18, 2006 at 12:51 amI would almost bet that, along with all the 3rd party FW, USB, and SATA Express Card34 options that will
be coming along soon, that there will also be an Express Card34 P2 reader (remember, I said *almost*!)
And I’m not sure what you mean when you say “The existing non Intel 15 and 17 inch laptops, however, still will utilize a PC card slot that will accept the p2 cards.” Still will? The existing ones, of course, have cardbus slots, but I would (here I go again) almost bet that all new laptops (MacBooks)
will have Express34 slots, and they’ll be here soon. The only way to have a built-in cardbus slot is to buy a soon-to-be out of date PB.

January 18, 2006 at 2:56 amIt is a metter of time. New laptops won’t run FCP yet either but will you want to be lugging around an older Ti book in a year or so when there are new ones running faster versions of FCP.
P2 is already only “good” on onlder laptops. The firestores will make much more sense per GIG withing months unless P2 has a suden and miraculous price drop.
The new card slots will not accept existing P2 media. I am not trying to rain on the Panasonic parade, but just months ago they were the ones telling everyone to bring a laptop to every shoot. They should stop introducing products that end in the number 2.
I think the last one (you know, the big betacam killer) was M2.

Tell me about it David. Anybody need a good door stop. I have several M11 machines. Hey I still have lots of M1 footage shot back in 1988 of a music festival we have here every year laying around. Anybody know of and old M1 playback deck.
