P2 Slot obsceleted by Express slot on new Macs?
So what’s up with this? Even before the HVX200 hits the streets, it’s media is old-fashioned? At least as regards the workflow into a current model Apple laptop. Are there outboard readers available?
Obviously the new Express standard offers some advantages of speed and smaller size, but an outboard reader really messes things up on location; you don’t always have the space or place to put things down on a neat table.
Jan, you’re the only voice out there who’s privy to all this, what’s up?

One would think that Apple would consult with you folks, especially considering the gross number of FCP systems they’ve sold because of your previous collaberation on the DVPRO100 codec. I for one just spent a fortune upgrading my editing facility to FCP for this reason.
I have to tell you, I’m a little concerned about the P2 workflow now that the current models of the Apple laptop don’t accept the card. In the field this seemed up to now to be the best was to download, protect (write DVD) and transport the shooting product to the edit room. Granted I could (and now probably will) stock up on “last year’s” laptops to preserve this process, or as others have correctly observed, use an outboard adapter, but as you acn imaging, I find this a bit troubling.

My question is simple.
Why move to this laptop is you know that current laptops will utilize the cards, and there isn’t an issue?
The new laptops aren’t shipping until February, and FCP5 won’t even run on them until late March,
By then, much of this will be figured out hopefully, including the release of Firestore, and other HD streaming solutions.

Yup- especially as the Apple desktops, which would be my preferred editing platform have never supported PCMCIA in their stock configuration I don’t see the issue here. Adapters will take care of this in due time with the new MacBooks. The current PCMCIA stocked PowerBook models which are more than up to the task of in the field downloading will be available I’d expect through the end of 2006 new and for many years to come on the used market

And I expect that their prices will drop both used and at the Apple Store.

The new model has actually enough cpu power for convenient hd editing. 5 times more than the last PB (and 7 times more than the one I’m typing, not to mention display resolution, etc. Everybody does not buy new computers twice a year…).

I think it’s more a question of obsolescence than adaptability – especially if the replacement isn’t backward compatible.
You can still use a 3 1/2″ floppy in a computer with an adapter, but who would want to?

I am very surprise by this move by Apple, but I was just thinking about last year, at a Steve Job’s keynote they talked about a new collaboration with Sony.
Anybody know if Sony as a Express Card camera in the works?

Not to burst anyone’s bubble but I’d suspect this move by Apple has little to do with Panasonic and everything to do with the fact that PCMCIA is not popular as an interface and ExpressCard opens the door to much more in terms of performance and flexbility. The folks at G-Drive felt slighted to see FW800 go away too so go figure.
