P2 Slot obsceleted by Express slot on new Macs?

Sony announced yesterday that their Memory Stick Duo will be available in 4 & 8 gig. mid-year… So, maybe something is in the works with Apple/Sony???

As I said in an earlier post, perhaps there will be room for both ports PCMCIA and Express on the new 17″ widescreen MacBooks. (Hey, they gotta give us one) P2 slot is not obsoleted as long as it does what it does – move data through the HVX200 as fast as it does thereby replacing the need for HD heads and tape mech. Will the P2 slot look the same in 5 years? probably not but the HVX200’s of today will still be very useable then too, just as sony’s DV-1000 is still around today making money. Technology is moving at an ever increasing rate but as long as the tool does what it does our investment is safe. Although we may have to live with a few adapters.

Huh? Compared to what?
PCMCIA is popular enough to cause Panasonic, LaCie and many, many other manufacturers and end users to use it, including some Mac-centric videographers.
Sure, ExpressCard may someday prove to be useful, but it’s barely used by anyone now, whereas PCMCIA will remain popular for “a long time” — at least 2-3 years in my opinion.
As mentioned above, hopefully a forthcoming 17″ MacBook will include both interfaces. It’s more than unfortunate that the new 15″ MacBook doesn’t have at least a PCMCIA slot.

Just my opinion, but personally have not had a single PCMCIA card since I started using laptops four years ago. I just don’t see this as really that big a deal- adapters are already coming down the pipe, for example:

And it’s not just Apple moving onto ExpressCard, Dell is doing the same thing. So you can see the PC market will go that route pretty quick. If we kept every interface past models have, we’d still be stuck with serial and SCSI connectors.

You never know, maybe the next gen of HVX will have PCIe cards. Its just an upgrade.

It’s a little unfortunate Apple elected to use the small 34 width Express Card.
For example, even with the adapter cited by Noah, you can’t use CF cards.
There are fw readers however.
