Here’s a question for the P2 experts in the forum. I currently use a Z1 to shoot in HD, but down convert to DV for editing. At some point in the future, we will move to HD editing and I will go back to the original tapes to capture the HD footage into a NLE and cut new shows in HD. With P2 is it possible to record in HD and save these shots for future use and then convert the HD files to SD for use now? We have an AVID Adrenaline and an Xpress pro. Many of the shots that we shoot are used in a variety of programs. I have some that we shot 10 years ago that still find their way into current programs.

You could easily start with the DVCPROHD files copied over from the P2 media and use Avid to create an “offline” version in DV while maintaining references to the originals. Of course the DVCPROHD footage would need to be archived on a hard drive or DLT tape somewhere.

Thanks Noah. I was hoping it something easy like that. I notice that you have DVD listed in your profile as an expertise. What DVD authoring program would you recommend for use with the AVIDS.
    Appreciate your advice.

It depends on the system- if you have access to a Mac- definitely DVD Studio Pro. On the PC side there’s not really a killer app I know of.

Best PC DVD Authoring tool right now is DVD-lab PRO and only $199, but has a feature set that should cost 2 or 3 times that price. But requires more knowledge of spec.

I’m not a beta tester, but I’ve been curious what Adobe Encore DVD will look like in this pending release. They’ve had well over a year to add features and get up to speed. I like Encore and I am really hopeful that it got a professional overhaul.

The question is… does the video collection (and Encore DVD) continue to cater to the wedding videographer market???, or will Adobe finally take things up a notch. Encore is nice, but it has no scripting support. Premieire Pro is nice, but it doesn’t deserve the name “Pro” right now compared to competing NLEs.

The thing that Adobe has going for it is that their integration actually works. I dumped my dual G5s because the Final Cut Studio integration doesn’t work as advertised. Adobe’s does.

There’s a big year ahead for both Premiere and FCP – Premiere Pro should improve considerably with it’s next release, Adobe are finally serious about positioning it for the Pro market, and I would expect full support for the HVX, FCP should also come of age as well, there seems to be a lot of under the hood changes in version 5 that haven’t been fully implemented yet. When the new Intel G5’s come out, you’ll probably be able to run both apps on one machine!

I hope your right about Adobe.

I was at two seperate cities for their last video collection [city tour kickoff]. At both they asked a show of hands for who was a wedding videographer. In both cases close to 2/3rds the room raised their hands. At one the comment was something to the effect of “your our strongest market segment”.

I’ve been holding out on going Avid for the Adobe Video Collection release. Originally they had targeted the end of Q4 for that release. They said that at investor’s conferences and conference calls, but the merger with Macromedia happened a few months later than they anticipated and some transition could have prevented the timing of that launch date. Maybe, maybe not. But I have been waiting patiently to see what they cooked up.

The integration of Photoshop, Encore and After Effects is top notch (I don’t care for Audition myself). I already saw the after effects demo in October and I’m looking forward to the launch to see what other changes in other apps have been done.

I would assume HVX support will be in the cake, but what else will determine if I upgrade or just move on to Avid.

  • My editors have been authoring corporate, industrial and educational DVD projects with Encore quite successfully since it was first released. Since we are not a Mac-based shop, we tried several different PC apps and Encore was the winner. It’s successful integration with other Adobe apps is well known. Is it perfect? Is Studio Pro perfect? Do you guys really believe that most PC based companies just do event video?
