I have a new project starting this fall in Southern California featuring all forms of Motorcycle Racing. I have plenty of experience with Beta and DV Cam with many forms of action sports. Other than hiring a 16mm crew for some very fluid slow motion segments, all slomo has been created in a variety of software apps. This project will feature more slomo than standard motion. I know this forum is not dedicated to the recently announced JVC HD100 and I will post this also on that site, but, any comments re. the final slomo results if one were using the the variable frame rate of the Panasonic HVX200 vs. the JVC HD100 and doing the slomo in post. The JVC interchangeable lens vs. the fixed lens but variable-frame rate Panasonic? Other considerations? The P2 cards are an issue, but am confident that other methods of recording in the field are just around the corner. And no, I have no plans to shoot on 16mm!

Well, best way I know with standard def video to get a super-slowmo is to shoot 60i, but edit the project at 24p, which gives a wonderful 40% slowmo by taking each field of the 60i and turning it into a frame.

For HD, the best you’ll get is taking 720p60 from the Varicam or HVX200 and editing on a 24p timeline, giving you that wonderful 40% slowmo, which should look better still than the 60i method with standard def. The other option is to shoot 60i HD, and slow it down to 24p in post via a similar method to which I describe for SD above, and that should also look good, but I’d be tempted to take the 1080i60 down to 720p24 if I was doing that as it might just stand up better.
