When you apply a blur to an object, the stronger the blur becomes, the object will appear to start fading away. If you set the blur strong enough, the object will all but totally disappear. You can alleviate the problem by duplicating the blurred layer many times.
I was wondering if there was any good way of blurring something by a large amount while retaining the luminance of the object without having to deal with duplicating the layer many times?

try just using two copies, one that is less blurred, the other overlayed on top. Also, consider using a different blur plug in, perhaps a Tinderbox lens blur, which has a nice bloom option.
