Clone Question
Posted by David Mathis on January 18, 2017 at 6:43 amI am trying to make a template for a video in text effect.
Here is what I am trying to do:
Use text as a matte
Have a background
Have outline of textThe problem is when I clone the text layer. I can not find a way to turn off the face color of the text in the clone layer with only the outline active.
Trying to create this effect here:

Any help is greatly appreciated.

January 18, 2017 at 6:08 pmYou do this by turning off the Text layer’s face color. This will update the clone.
Hope this helps.

I tried the method you described but all I am left with is just a text outline with video in it over a background. Turning the text face turns off the matte. So while turning off the face of the text turns off the face in the clone the result I am looking for is not there.
I want the face of the text to act as an image mask (matte) which is then applied to a video layer. The purpose of the clone is to act as the text outline. I have tried using a link behavior after making a copy of a text layer only the copy does not match any changes made to the original.
Here is how the layers are stacked:
Text outline
Original text (used as image mask)
Video (with image mask applied)
BackgroundI have tried using a luma keyer, various color correction methods and additional mattes only to not get the effect I am trying to achieve. ????

January 19, 2017 at 5:26 amHey David-
It is indeed a hassle to do what you’re looking for. It’s a convoluted mess of masks and clones. I built this effect for a plugin called Outliner. You can outline anything with an alpha. And you can then fill the outline with a color, texture or drop zone (your video). The plugin is at https://bretfx.com/product/outliner/ and you might just find it easier.
But If you want to try it yourself, to the best of my recollection the gist would be to add an outline to the clone using a glow effect, with a zero range. THEN use the source as an inverted matte to knock out the inner part of the clone. Then you’ll have to turn the source layer back on because using it as a matte turn it off. Told ya it gets convoluted.

Thank you so much for a fast reply. Just used the method you described and it works. For some reason using a keyer did not work as planned but the method you mentioned worked like a charm. I hope that Apple will look at making the clone tool more useful. Then again I probably should get some training. Thanks again. You have saved me a trip to the head doctor. LOL

January 20, 2017 at 5:34 amCan you explain exactly what you did? I tried following Bret’s steps, but I must be missing a step in there somewhere because I don’t really get any outline at the end.
I was working on my own solution after I realized I misinterpreted what you were doing. I remember a solution that Mark Spencer came up with using the Min Max filter and creating two clones. The problem I had was that the bounding box for the clone was limited to the bounding box for the text layer so to fix that, I had to put the text layer in a group, fix the resolution of the group and then clone the group.
Here’s what it looked like:
As I said, I’m curious about this other method that I couldn’t get to work. What were the specific steps you went through to get it working?

Not in front of my computer at the moment but this might provide some insight:
Layer order:
Clone to be used as outline with glow effect. Used original text layer as inverted image mask using alpha channel.
Original text layer applied as image mask to effect source (video layet).
Video
BackgroundI will try to get a screenshot later.

I also used a link parameter behavior so the inner and outer glow are the same color.

January 20, 2017 at 7:21 amGot it. I read Bret’s comment as using the Glow effect, not Outer Glow. That’s what I was doing wrong. Working for me that was as well.

February 6, 2017 at 7:27 pmMy bad I did say glow didn’t I? Somehow David figured it out anyway.
I did a tutorial on it as well. https://bretfx.com/create-your-own-fcp-x-outline-plugin/
