  • Cylinder in 3D Space with Texture on Surface…

Posted by Jonah Benes on March 11, 2011 at 4:52 pm

My knowledge of Motion is a work in progress, but at least as of Motion 3 and the tutorials I had seen, this would have been a stretch of the program’s abilities.

What I would like to do, if possible, is created a cylinder in 3D space, and have all of its surfaces covered by a texture.

At this point, I could then presumably spin the cylinder, rotate around it with the camera, etc.

Is it even possible to take the cylinder and have the edges rounded somewhat?

I suppose a good test would be to ask if one can create a pigskin-surfaced football in motion and have it travel in a nice spiral?

Can’t get there from here. Motion works with flat planes in 3D space, like After Effects. You’ll need a 3D app to do that, like Cinema 4D.

Or you can check out Zaxwerk’s pro Animator FX. It is a 3D plug-in for people who want to do simple 3D graphics. Check it out here: https://zaxwerks.com/proanimatorfx/index.shtml

This is difficult to do with Motion tools alone. You will need a plugin Boris Continuum 7, Zaxwerks or 3d App such as Cinema 4d to accomplish this effect.

Yup- sounds like you need to move up to a 3D app for some of your work.
