    For instance, I’m trying to animate a hand connected to an arm. Thanks for any pointers.

    Well there’s a relationship between layers and objects so if you animate at the layer level then all the objects within that layer will move accordingly.

    I guess in your example the hand and arm objects would be put inside a layer which allows animation of both objects (layer level) or individual objects (object level).
