  • How do you feather imported video frame edges?

I’ve imported several video clips and want to feather the edges similar to how FCP feathers video. There seems to be no simple way of doing this in Motion 2.

use the Mask tool to add a rectangle mask and adjust the feather to your liking.

After drawing the mask, you can also use the Channel Blur filter (Alpha only) for a smoother feather than the mask-shape’s feather.

I’ve tried that before, but there is no parameter for feathering when I select the mask.

Did you draw a mask? (it’s the to the right of the Text tool) The bottom parameter for a drawn mask is Feather in both the Inspector and the Dashboard.

There’s a great chapter on masking in the user manual…. (Starts at page 851 if you’re using Motion 2)

You can also add an image mask to any object and use any object with alpha (edges) to become that mask. You can continue to modify the original shape object (including animating it) and have it immediately update the mask.

    Example:

Add a video clip to the project.

Add a rounded rectangle to the project (from Library > Shapes).

Manipulate it so it is the right shape for the mask.

Select the video clip and choose Object > Add Image Mask.

Drag and drop the rounded rectangle object onto the Image Mask element of the video clip.
