  Best way to normalize interview footage.

  Hey Guys,

  I’m trying to wrap up some interviews, simple set up a couple cameras and a lav. One of the subjects has huge variation in how loud he talks and I’m trying to find a way to normalize it best. Actually ‘normalizing’ it in Audition brings out a ton of noise in the background during the lower volume sections and sounds a little throughout. I’ve tried doing this along with a hard limit and some noise reduction but it still doesn’t sound quite right. The audio coming in is pretty clean and sounds good aside from the range of levels. Any advice?

  I’d try to remove the background noise by sampling the noise floor, then removing that from the audio. Then normalize, and see if that helps out. It sounds as if there was some background noise – often heating/ac systems, or computer noise. They can be removed, as long as there’s a section you can sample where the talent isn’t speaking.
