Make a layer only appear on non-transparent without track matte
I want a layer which has alpha and has been turned black and blurred (faux shadow) to appear only on non-transparency in my comp, but I want it to assess transparency all the way down, without precomposing my layers and using a track matte.
Although it seems impossible to everyone I have asked, the data is there so the real question is how to tell AE to use it… any geniuses care to weigh in?

The way you’ve phrased it has me a little confused. It sounds like you want the ‘Preserve Transparency’ layer switch. This will make the layer only appear where there is alpha in the layers below.
