August 23, 2005 at 8:24 pmHello –
I’m reasonably new to this industry but i have done a couple HD projects and as far as I understand the only difference between HD and SD is pixel dimensions – whereas typically you might work in a 720×486 (D1) workspace – HD comes in 2 formats – 720p (1280×720) and 1080i (1920×1080) – these are actually presets in your comp setup window, so yes you can do HD graphics – the only difference is greater render times –
Hope this helps,

August 24, 2005 at 3:07 pmI don’t think it matters, as long as it is uncompressed and whichever NLE you are using can handle it.
If you are overlaying graphics on HD footage, I’d use Quicktime because of the alpha channel capabilities (when rendering, make sure to choose RGB+Alpha).

August 24, 2005 at 3:55 pmWhat does your editor want? Where is your file going? If it is going to tape, and you are sending it to a post house, ask them. They should know the frame size, and what kind of digital file/codec they want.

August 24, 2005 at 8:20 pmmy boss just asked me if it is possible. and if so, how are you going to do it.
i am making graphics for a campagin, and they are going to take my graphics and their hd film and send them to another post house to do the online edit and overlay my graphics. so i need to know what to set my COMPS up as and what to EXPORT my finished projects as. anyone know? -

August 24, 2005 at 8:47 pmIf you set your comps up without talking to the post house, you risk rendering everything over again. You may not have time to do that.
What flavour of HD is it? 720p? 1080i? What are the specs of their HD film? You need to match them.
You have a responsibility as a motion graphics specialist to deliver according to the proper technical specs as determined by the final output of the post house. Don’t let your boss prevent you from doing that.
Call the post house. If they’ve done HD before, they will have their own workflow, and will appreciate your asking them before you deliver, believe me.

August 25, 2005 at 12:17 amYes — I do this all the time. Avid houses sometimes want Quicktime moives in the Avid Meridien codec, sometimes in the Animation codec. If they don’t give you a preference, choose the Animation codec. If that’s too big, consider Photo-JPEG codec at 100%. If that’s too big, use Photo-JPEG at 89% or 94% or so.
Sometimes they like Targa sequences, though. But the post house should have a preference.
Don’t use File>export, by the way … use Composition>Make Movie so you can then use the Render Queue.
But you probably knew that … 🙂
