For some odd reason, I cannot open a AE CS6 project file in CS5
This is insane.
Ive looked all over the internet and there is no info on this compatibility issue.
Any ideas?

AE projects are forwards-compatible for several generations, but they are not backwards-compatible.
AE CS6 has an option to save a CS5.5 project, and CS5.5 has the option to save a CS5 project. These are the only exceptions to the rule above.
One other option you could try is pt_OpenSesame [link].

Adobe files are not backwards compatible.
If you want to open it in CS5, you would need to use the “Save a copy as CS5.5” Then you would need a copy of CS5.5, open the project and “Save a copy as CS5”
Any effects that aren’t in the CS5 version would be listed as missing, but when you go forward again, they would be return with the original parmaters used, ie..warp stabilizer wouldn’t show up in CS5(missing), but if saved the CS5 project and opened it up later in CS6 it would return it would return with the original settings you used in the initial project.

Classy move Adobe… update yearly with incremental improvements and force everyone to keep shelling out.

Try saving as an XML file. That should help. 🙂
