  • Did something change with the .avi/VfW renderer in CS6?

Posted by Stephen Rutherford on June 11, 2012 at 4:04 pm

Did Adobe change the way that .avis were rendered from CS5 to CS6? I create content for large-format video displays (Daktronics) in weird pixel dimensions, and for some reason, CS6 “Lossless” (I’m rendering on a PC) will output the .avi file, but the boards I have played .avi files to for years will not recognize them.

I’m just trying to figure out if something changed and how I need to fix my issue going forward.

    Thanks!

Try rendering the comp with AME.

    Thank you for the suggestion!

However, AME did not get me results, either.

In speaking with Daktronics, it may be that we need an upgrade of their proprietary software, Venus7000.

If anyone is looking for this (I know, a niche market, to be sure), to render effectively from CS6, Daktronics claims that your V7000 software should be version 6.17 or newer. Our Venus 7000 is currently at 6.10. We’ll be upgrading this week.

I will update the post on whether it works or not 😉

I have not had problems with CS6 for Windows and Venus 7000’s with uncompressed. HUFFYUV codec & WMV9 also seems to work well.

Daktronics older software seems to work fine with these using 6.05 through 6.10.

If you want to send me a sample file, I can help you analyze the codec and probably find a solution.

Choose uncompressed AVI from AfterEffects, or -vcodec rawvideo and -vcodec huffyuv seem to work well from FFMPEG.
WMV9 also seems to work fine using both the SDK and GUI tool.

I’m working through some Mac -> Venus issues with CS5 and saw this post. I’ll probably DM you through twitter as well, since I don’t spend a lot of time on the COW.
