  Effects similar to the old Xaos Tools (Pennello, etc)????

  Does anyone remember the old Xaos products?

  ‘Pennello’ was a fantastic tool. It was sold/bundled with 3d applications in the 90’s. Despite the 3d connection, it was an image processing application (I ran in within 3ds from the post section).

  The software produced swirling, organic artwork. It was called a ‘brushing engine’. They had a hair type effect (fully animatable) that was very interesting. Not realistic at all (not really the intent) but very interesting.

  For those of you familar with these products, is there anything out today that offers the same look?

  Yes, I remember them and they were some of my favourite plug-ins. Back at MacWorld in January 1995, I was standing at the Xaos Tools booth watching a Paint Alchemy demo and I turned and looked at the guy standing right next to me on my right and it was Todd Rundgren — one of my favourite musicians of all time. We chatted a few minutes about Media 100s (which he and I had just bought recently back then) and also about Paint Alchemy and the other Xaos Tools plug-ins also. A nice guy and a phenomenal music producer, to say the least.

  There is no one single plug-in that replicates the kind of brush effects that Xaos Tools was famous for, but there are various ones out there from Re:vision FX and DigiEffects, to name a couple.

  If anyone else has any ideas, I’m listening as well — I still miss my Paint Alchemy.
